The Scarlet Tree & The Reputations
by Tim Scott
I grew up in the Greenlake area of
North Seattle, one block from the lake and directly across
the street from John Marshall Junior High School at 519
Ravenna Blvd. Just on the other side of the I-5 freeway, as
the crow flies, was Garski’s Scarlet Tree at 6521 Roosevelt
Way NE. It had been there for years—built in 1925 and
originally called Garski’s Grill, back when Roosevelt Way
was known as 10th Ave NE. In 1938, it became the Wayfair
Café, when the building was owned by Lynette Perry. Fred
Garski purchased the restaurant in 1964, changing the name
to Garski's Scarlet Tree. It was apparently a popular spot
for business men, a meeting place for city officials, union
officers—let’s just say it had a long, colorful history
I never went there as a kid but as
a teenager, I walked past The Tree every day on my way to
Roosevelt High. I would look in the windows and imagine that
one day, I too would patronize The Tree, sitting and
enjoying cocktails like adults do. And so it was, in 1973,
that I did just that. Having recently met and begun playing
with Jeff Simmons who, in his early 20’s had already been a
member of the Mothers of Invention, performed with the
London Philharmonic and released his first solo album,
produced by Frank Zappa. We formed a band and, along with
David Lanz and
Russ Kammerer soon
were backing up NW artist Tiny Tony (of the Statics), who
had an early regional hit with Merrilee Rush, “Hey Mrs.
Jones”. Jeff and I would stop at The Tree on our way to
rehearse nearby, having martinis and trying to stump the
house entertainer, Steve Brown at the piano and Hammond
organ, which he played simultaneously. We would request TV
theme songs--amazingly, he seemed to know them all. I loved
those visits to the Scarlet Tree—carefree days.
Fast forward to 1980—Jeff had found
The Tree as an outlet to play jazz and R&B—the owners were
just trying out live music. To my knowledge, an actual band
had never performed there, always solo piano. I was playing
in different bands with guitarist Rich Dangel of the
legendary Fabulous Wailers, Floating Bridge, et al &
weaseled us both into the mix at The Tree, along with
drummer/vocalist Tim Haines (Timothy
D. Smith) and other
various players. Rich & I were just conceiving a new band,
Rich Dangel & the Reputations and knew we wanted Jeff on
keyboards and vocals. I enlisted
Kurtis Kolstad,
who had just left the Seattle Allstars, on drums and
vocals—all we needed were horns. Enter Bill Franklin on alto
sax, Robbie Jordan on tenor and Doug Canning on
trumpet/flugelhorn—The QFC Horns and we were set.
The Reputations accomplished a great deal during our
tenure—playing the Seattle Coliseum for Bumbershoot 3 years
running, winning the first Seattle Music Award for Best R&B
Band, opening for Ray Charles, Johnny Winter, Sam & Dave,
Buddy Guy & Jr Wells, The Persuasions and backing up Etta
James, Big Joe Turner, Mark Lindsay, Diane Schuur, Buddy
Miles and a host of regional artists—Bernadette
Bascom, Big Joe
Ericson, Sam Smith, Kate Hart, Johnny Rusk and others. We
also backed the NW Rock & Roll Revival @ Bumbershoot with
Ron Holden, emcee featuring Dave Lewis, Little
Bill Engelhart,
Merrilee Rush, Tiny Tony, The Fleetwoods, Wailers, Sonics,
Kingsmen, Don & the Goodtimes & The Ventures. The music
we played was fun, challenging and funky—jazz, r&b, funk,
blues & early NW rock. We were the band other musicians came
out to see and I was always very proud of that. The Scarlet
Tree became our home base--the people that worked there and
the patrons that showed up night after night felt like
family. We played there every month, several times a month.
I used to joke that I kept a cot in the back—I even
spearheaded the stage construction by showing up one night
with a hammer and knocking out the coat closet. Borrowing
from the old Bob Murray's Dog House Restaurant slogan, I
changed it to “All
Roads Lead to The Tree”. Once we started the ball rolling,
other bands became interested—pretty much every talented
band in Seattle. Little Bill & the Blue Notes, Alive n Well,
Duffy Bishop, Kate
Hart,
Korla
Wygal, LJ Porter,
Isaac Scott, The Royals, Freddie & the Screamers, Sam Smith, Smoke,
Dick Powell,
Mark Whitman, Sweet
Talkin’ Jones, Freddie Pink and a bunch more bands that aren’t coming to
mind right this minute.
So it was that early on, during the
period we were backing up Buddy Miles, we started doing
shows there with Buddy on the weekends. Fri/Sat--an opening
set & 2 shows per night, $8 cover. Buddy only played one or
two songs per night on drums (he was notorious for
destroying other drummer’s kits and Kurt Kolstad’s Ludwigs
got “The Buddy Treatment”), he mostly played guitar.
Upside-down & backwards guitar, like Hendrix. Loud. Really
Loud. But no matter how messed up he got (and OMG could he
get messed up!), he always SANG HIS ASS OFF! It was
astounding, really. I would watch him in amazement as he
would mount his audio assault, getting lost in a 20 minute
PCP-fueled guitar rage and then bursting into the most
powerful, soulful singing I’d ever heard at close range.
Sadly, he was arrested for assault with a deadly weapon in
front of the club in between sets after threatening someone
with a butcher knife, spent the weekend in jail (Gib, the
owner bailed him out) and I personally had to fire him,
because he wouldn’t go away and his street rep was starting
to rub off on us.
Over time, band members came and
went—Jeff Simmons left and was replaced by "Jimmy"
James Holden of the
dynastic Holden family (Jimmy’s father Oscar Sr is
considered to be the patriarch of black jazz music in
Seattle, big brother Ron had a million selling hit single in
1960, “Love You So”), Kurt Kolstad left and was replaced by
Doug Gore and then Dan McGee.
Denney Goodhew
replaced Bill Franklin and then became the sole horn
soloist, followed by
Jim Coile, then
Jon Goforth.
Ultimately, I moved to Los Angeles in 1985 and was replaced
first by
Vail Johnson and
then
Rick Houle but The
Reps continued on for a few more years. The club eventually
changed hands and then burned down but the old core crew,
owners Gib Hain, Jan Allen, 2E Rose and employees Blair (Gib’s
daughter), Lori, Carrie,
Nona, Diane,
Susan, Ramon, Joanie,
Cholo,
Ray, Connie, Robin,
Jake, Mary and others I’m forgetting, were a real family and
made The Tree a home for us wayward musicians. Thanks for
that. Long live the memory of the Scarlet Tree. It’s passing
left a large, gaping hole where Seattle’s musical soul used
to reside. It’s my hope that something shows up to fill that
hole.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
TRICKFISH AMPLIFICATION® WELCOMES Tim Scott
Los Angeles,
California, September 21, 2016
–
Trickfish Amplification welcomes journeyman bassist/vocalist Tim
Scott to the Trickfish family.
Trickfish is honored to welcome Seattle
based bassist, composer, producer and vocalist Tim Scott to the
ever expanding artist family.
Tim is a seasoned veteran that has
performed and or recorded with some of the most notable names in
the music business including: Eric Clapton, Stevie Wonder, Billy
Preston, Dr. John, John Mayall and Jack Mack and the Heart
Attack, Tower of Power, Dave Mason, Robben Ford, Etta James, The
Boneshakers, El Chicano, The Grammy All Stars and his latest
project, Zen Blues Quartet, with internationally acclaimed
drummer and member of the Heartbreakers, Steve Ferrone. His R&B
roots are deep and his soulful singing makes him the complete
musician. His latest project, Red House "four of the baddest
players/singers in the Northwest, playing blues, R&B, soul &
funk with fiery, wild abandon; doing it "Their Way" has just
released their latest EP entitled "Over Yonder".
"We’re so pleased that Tim has joined
the Trickfish family" states Richard Ruse, Trickfish founder.
"Tim is not only a gifted bassist whose impeccable groove and
penchant for picking the right notes makes him unique, he’s also
a singer’s singer. His style has been likened to Donny Hathaway
and for those R&B aficionado’s that’s a high compliment. But, as
is the case with all of the Trickfish artists, most importantly
Tim is a warm and spiritual human being who shares his gifts
easily and often. It’s a big reason he’s played with a list of
artists that represent the very best our industry has to offer."
"I’ve known Richard for quite some
time, well over 20 years. I first met him when we played
together in the Tower of Power Rhythm Section
–
he was subbing for Rocco and I was singing and we just became
friends sharing in the force of nature known as Francis Rocco
Prestia!"
states Tim. "We’ve
of course kept in touch and recently I realized it was time to
get a new rig and Richard’s
company came to mind. I stopped by a local music store to
audition the gear and was astounded at the organic sound and
tightness of the rig. Being an R&B influenced player I needed
something that was greasy, could get a little grit and sounded
authentic. I was blown away by the Trickfish rig! It has all the
attributes I was looking for and is the quickest amp I’ve ever
played through. I’m now playing through the Bullhead1K and two
SM112’s. It doesn’t hurt that it’s easy to move around,
versatile and fits in a car…I’m in heaven."

Tim met with his long-time friend, Rocco Prestia (founding

Las Vegas band, Santa Fe. Since Santana is in town playing an
extended engagement at The Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, about half
of his band was in attendance (including bassist Benny Rietveld,
drummer Dennis Chambers & percussionist Karl Perazzo). It was so
stupid how many amazing bass players there were, Santa Fe's
Blogmaster, Bobby Gladd decided he needed a picture to
commemorate the Bass-tastic Event.

featured vocals by the legendary Alex Ligertwood of Santana and
Brian Auger fame and Bernard Fowler, of Living Color, Herbie
Hancock and the Rolling Stones.
Here's a review of the live performance of Steve Ferrone's Farm
Fur band at The Mint in West L.A, including a photo of Tim with
Steve! This gig, a warm-up for their amazing show for Sabian
Live! at the Winter NAMM show--both shows were dedicated to the

Mint show featured a special cameo appearance by his brother, trumpeter
Randy Brecker.

The Players: Steve Ferrone, drums, Bernard Fowler, vocals; Alex
Ligertwood, vocals, guitar; Miles Joseph, guitar; Tim Scott,
bass, vocals; Dean Gant, keyboards; Tom Saviano, sax; Jason
Weber, sax; Randy Brecker, trumpet.
Material: Premier session cats and top-of-the-line sidemen make
Steve Ferrone’s “Farm Fur” All-Star Band a class act. Like a lot
of groups that consist of seasoned musicians, Farm Fur explores
jazz variations, soulful blues and groove-laden songs. In fact,
the grooves are so deep, the crowd is compelled to move and
sway. And, though the jam-filled songs may not be radio
friendly, hearing them live is a special treat. Indeed, it’s a
pleasure that every music lover should experience.
Musicianship: With players that have graced stages with the
Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Santana, Beyonce, Eric Clapton,
Outkast, Madonna, David Bowie and on and on, the musicianship is
nothing short of extraordinary. Each player enjoys at least one
solo moment that highlights his chops and unfathomable skills.
And although, at times, those chops may seem a little familiar
they, nonetheless, are soul stirring.
Performance: One of the most remarkable things about players of
this caliber is the way they communicate while onstage. With
just a nod, or an almost imperceptible movement, they let each
other know when a break was coming and when it was their turn to
shine. This preternatural ability obviously comes from years of
experience, but it’s something that every band should try to
emulate. The result is a sound so tight there is never a moment
when the energy wanes or the groove dissipates.
Summary: Steve Ferrone put this band together for one simple
reason –– these guys love playing. And their love of music is
not only inspiring, it’s enchanting. A band like Farm Fur
doesn’t play that often because their work schedules are so
demanding. But, when they do play a local gig, you would be
doing yourself a large favor to catch them.
